Power generators are devices that provide access to electricity in the event of a failure or other power supply issues. Such equipment must be regularly maintained to ensure efficient operation over a long period of time. How should you take care of a power generator?
Monthly inspections of power generators
Power generators should be inspected, maintained, and, if necessary, repaired once a month. During such an inspection, the following aspects are checked:
- technical condition of the starting system and battery,
- condition of fuel, oil, and coolant,
- condition of air, fuel, and oil filters,
- operation of fuel delivery pumps,
- electrical connections,
- fire protection systems,
- insulation resistance of the generator windings.
During generator maintenance, it is also necessary to disconnect the loads from the common network using the main switch.
During the inspection, the system is started and individual parameters are measured. If they are incorrect, repairs are required. Using a malfunctioning generator poses a serious risk to the operator, nearby infrastructure, and connected equipment.
The air filter in a power generator
When checking the technical condition of a generator, special attention should be paid to the air filter. It is one of the most important engine components, as it cleans the air entering the combustion chamber from impurities. From time to time, dirty filters must be replaced with new ones to ensure proper operation.
The spark plug in a power generator
The spark plug is also extremely important. It generates electrical discharges in the combustion chamber. Servicing this component requires disconnecting the electrical wires. Once the spark plug is removed, the insulation should be inspected, the part cleaned or replaced, and the gap between the electrodes checked.
The drive belt in a power generator
Generators also use drive belts – for the alternator, blower, fuel and water pumps, or compressor. To service them, the cover must be removed, tension checked, and adjustments made. In some cases, the belt must be replaced with a new one.
Weekly inspections of power generators
Power generators should also undergo weekly inspections. These checks aim to verify:
- the starting system,
- the fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems,
- the power supply unit and rooms,
- protective grounding,
- control and measuring instruments,
- fire protection systems,
- availability of protective equipment.
During such work, it is necessary to start the generator and check if it operates properly and smoothly.
Other maintenance work on a power generator
To ensure proper operation of a generator, it is necessary to maintain its technical condition. Some components wear out much faster than others. These devices also use operating fluids, which lose their properties over time. For this reason, at least once every 12 months, additional inspections of certain components and an oil change are required.
Annual inspections should also include checking the control panel, regulation system, measuring and signaling instruments, and the ignition system. If any of these are defective or unsatisfactory, they must be replaced. Backup power sources must always be fully operational, even if they are rarely used.
Checking the surroundings of a power generator
Maintaining a generator is not enough. It is also necessary to ensure that the room housing the unit is in good condition. The room must be properly lit so that the operator can monitor the generator’s performance and quickly spot technical issues. It is also important to make sure there are no leaks. Before starting the generator, it must be confirmed that the unit is not in contact with a wet surface.
When should generator repairs be carried out?
All repair work, including oil changes in a generator, must be properly scheduled. The plant manager is responsible for determining the appropriate timing based on inspection results. All repairs must be performed by specialists. This ensures that the generator will operate correctly when needed.
